Cold Laser Therapy

Cold Laser Therapy

What is it?
It is a safe, non-thermal light therapy used in humans and animals for many different problems including pain relief, reduction of inflammation and swelling, and the promotion of wound healing and tissue regeneration.

How does it work?
In short, the cold laser produces light in three wavelengths that can penetrate skin and soft tissue up to a depth of 13 – 15cm when needed.  The light energy does not produce heat because it is pulsing very quickly (unlike previous lasers which can burn).  The light energy is absorbed by certain elements within body cells (chromophores), which are activated and trigger many biochemical processes to occur with many beneficial therapeutic outcomes.

What conditions benefit from Laser therapy?
There are a multitude of conditions, including:

  • Muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Soft tissue trauma
  • Hotspots and open wounds
  • Ear infections
  • Gingivitis
  • Anal Gland infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Surgical wounds

Pain Relief Therapy
Cold Laser treatments are excellent for providing quick drug-free pain relief for your pet.  They achieve this by the following:

  1. Cold lasers block pain signals from being transmitted to the brain.
  2. Reducing inflammation and swelling.
  3. When used along an animal’s spine, high levels of naturally produced endorphins are released which helps block pain and relax the patient (called ‘Unwind’ treatment).

Speeding Recovery from Injuries and Surgeries
Cold laser not only alleviates wound pain, but speeds up the healing process.  It works directly on the injured or affected areas and accelerates wound healing, strengthening muscles and connective tissues and improving mobility.

What can I expect at my Laser Therapy appointment?
The cold laser device will be held directly on your pets affected area for several minutes, or will be slowly scanned over the area instead. There is no discomfort and most pets relax during the treatments. For anxious pets, the Unwind treatment can be used initially to relax them quickly after scanning the laser over the spine from head to hips for two minutes.  There is no requirement to wear protective goggles as the light from cold lasers is safe.

Is it ever painful or uncomfortable?
No, Cold Laser Therapy with super pulsing devices is totally pain free and very comforting and relaxing.   As pain is reduced, your pet’s eyes may brighten and tails often start wagging!

Are there any side-effects?
Cold Laser Therapy has no known side effects and is considered both safe and effective across the veterinary spectrum.

What if I cannot keep my series of treatment appointments?
We understand that time is precious and so we have an easy to use Home Rental Laser service. The home version device has the same deep healing wavelengths as our in-clinic device and is cordless with a long battery life.  Length of hire is generally a week, with unlimited treatments during this time.  Our staff will explain how to perform the stress free, very convenient home treatments for your pets.
